CHAGCHARAN (SW): The first-ever female public prosecutor has commenced her duties in Ghor province following an exclusive story about lack of female prosecutors there by Salam Watandar.

Obaida Sharar has been appointed by the Attorney General Office (AGO) in Ghor as prosecutor at the provincial appellate court to process cases of violence against women. The newly appointed prosecutor has completed law studies at the Kabul University’s Faculty of Law. She has vowed to take serious practical steps in curbing cases of violence against women, and ensure easy access to justice for women.

Abdul Marouf Fayeq, chief prosecutor at the Ghor appellate court, has said in this regard that previously women hesitated approaching male prosecutors, but now they would feel comfortable sharing their problems with Obaida Sharar. The local civil society has also hailed the move.

Fareeda Nasiri, one of Ghor’s women rights activist, told Salam Watandar that previously women could not dare to tell a male prosecutor about physical and sexual abuses, but now they can share their ordeal with a female prosecutor in the province.
